What is the difference between whisky, bourbon and scotch ?

My husband's a whiskey guy. My understanding is that they are all whiskeys, but from different regions of the world. Bourbon is exclusively from Kentucky, and Scotch is exclusively from Scotland. There are also single malts and single barrels from various regions.
