Recorder consorts sans b sizes?

I remember hearing once that most recorder ensembles in the mid-15th century did not go any deeper than tenor. How common was the b (and great b) recorder in the 15th century, and when did the larger sizes finally 'go large' (become popular)? Did the pre-b consorts use the descant (soprano), or was it just alto and tenor?
